We recently toured Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate in Lexington, Kentucky. It’s a historical landmark where you can learn all about the senator known as “The Great Compromiser.” There is a mansion that belonged to his family and 17 acres of walking paths, original outbuildings, and a beautiful formal garden.
While I generally make people a little nervous when I take a toddler into a museum, Bradley really enjoys these trips and does a great job looking but not touching.
And he talks about the trip nonstop after we leave. That’s why I think it’s FABULOUS that The Henry Clay Estate has some events geared specifically for the kiddos. Today they’re hosting a Valentine Tea, where a costumed interpreter will take them on a special tour of the estate and enjoy some tea and sandwiches. That event is sold out, but they do have other events throughout the year, such as Artifact Adventures, where kids can examine 19th-Century artifacts. You can follow Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate on Facebook for the latest news.

I live in Owensboro, Ky, and we have a small, but wonderful museum. One of our favorite times to vs, is doing the Halloween season, when they tell ghost stories, and even have a ghost hunter visit.

My 8 year old would love a trip here. We took a tour of Farmington in Louisville and his school took a field trip to Locust Grove. He loved every minute there.

As a history major, I absolutely love old homes and Henry Clay was such a force in American politics of the 19th century.
