Mamavation Monday – Week 1 {The Journey Begins!}

01.04.10

Watch Lives Change

My goal for the year is simple. On January 1, 2011, I want to look back and say that I gave it my all. I want to know without a doubt that I did the work. That I took responsibility for my life and took positive steps in all areas. My faith, my parenting, my marriage, my health, my finances, my friendships, my blog, my last semester of school.

Of course I’m not Superwoman. I don’t mean that. There are going to be plenty of days when I’m tired and cranky and stressed out and won’t really care what I think on January 1, 2011. {Can you relate?} This is not about perfection. This is about moving forward and being proactive. It’s about taking baby steps. Surrounding myself with positive people and situations where I can encourage and be encouraged. No matter the numbers at the end of the year. Just knowing that I lived fully with the time I was given.

Those are all things I wanted for my 30th year, and yet somehow I let them slip by. But it’s not too late. I can start now. And I am!

THE PLAN:

  • Do 50 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes of abs at least 4 days/week.
  • Drink 8 servings of water/day.
  • Keep a food journal. I am so not a calorie counter, but just watching my portions and being accountable to my Mamavation ladies is key. You can check out what recipes I have planned for the week here.
  • Get adequate sleep! That’s a big one for me. During this past semester, I would stay up all night about 3 times/week and would live off caffeine. I hate depending on caffeine to keep me going. I want to make healthy choices so my body naturally keeps me going!
  • Play actively with my son every day. Whether that means going for a walk on the farm, at the track, or just dancing inside. (-;

Since we’re getting it all out on the table, there is another specific goal I have in mind. If the timing works out as we’d like, I’d love to be pregnant again in March or shortly thereafter. My first pregnancy went well for the most part. I had a lot of morning sickness, but as my sis said, “That just means it’s working!” Then in the last half, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. According to my doctor’s scale, I failed the sugar test twice. According to the nutrition counselor’s scale, I passed… barely. So we opted for the cautious route and said I had it. I pricked my finger 5 times a day, ate immaculately, and tracked my blood pressure. It started to creep up at the end, and we decided to induce on my due date. Something I really didn’t want, but I was still able to have a natural birth, and it was awesome!

The nutrition counselor said it is unusual to have gestational diabetes with your first pregnancy, and it’s very likely I will have it with my second. But I just don’t want to go there again! So I want to do whatever I can to ensure a healthy pregnancy. I would love to be as fit as possible and be 10-15 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight. Wow, that means I have just 3 months to BOOK IT!

THE STATS: {Cause I said in my video I would share these. Y’all know I am seriously committed! Take that however you like.} (-;

  • Current weight – 159.2
  • Goal weight – 130-135ish
  • Current BMI – 27.8 {smack dab in the middle of the overweight category, btw}
  • Goal BMI – Under 25
  • Current waist – 36.5 {my problem area}
  • Goal waist – Under 35

So there you have it! Part of my plan to get fit this year includes applying to be one of the next Mamavation Moms. You can read more about that and watch my application video here. I have 13 weeks {Eeek!} to reach my goal, and I need your support! Will you please tweet the following message so I know you’re behind me? And feel free to read 100 Things About Me to get to know me a little better.

Hey, @bookieboo! I want @FrugalFemina to be the next #Mamavation Mom. She has my support!

If I make it into the top 5 on January 14, I’ll also need you to vote daily until the 21st.

But I’m not just doing this for myself. I’m also pledging my support to the Sistahood so I can support you along the way, too! I’m standing up for those women who have 200 pounds to lose or 30 and need help getting there. So come join me and let’s see how great we can make 2010 together!

Cheers to you! It sounds to me like you have some great steps outlined toward reaching a bigger (or should I say smaller) and better goal.
I am Weight Watcher Lifetime member and I can tell you that journaling what you eat is a HUGE step in the right direction. I would hesitate putting things into my mouth because I didn’t want to admit I was snacking so much. And just being aware helped me cut out a lot of bad habits.
And of course lots of water is always good for you.
You CAN do it!!! I’m behind you!!!

Amy, I have thought that sooo many times today. Can’t eat *that*, because then I’ll have to tell people! ;-)

ahaha, I hate counting the calories too especially when you have to use guess-ta-mation (guessing). Oh girl, I hope it works out for you and DH in Spring ;) I wish you the best in the mamavation campaign!!

Thank you! I don’t like math, so I guess that’s why I don’t dig the calorie counting. Of course, who really wants to know the answer?! ;-)

Great post. I had gestational diabetes as well and was never so healthy in my life. I ate right. I drank plenty of water. I exercised. I had a baby and gained 60 lbs! We can do this!

Of course, I need to hear from the Mamavation team to see what really is a good weight for me and all that to make sure these goals are realistic. Can’t wait to talk to them!

So happy you joined us in Mamavation, Katie. (And btw, I giggled when you commented to Leah about stumbling the post where you listed your stats! ha!) Anywho, you have a great plan. And a more than worthy goal. We’ll be here to lean on, if you need it.

Go Katie!! You can totally do it and I will be doing my best right along with you! We have about the same goal weight, but I have MUCH more to lose than you! I know you will get there! And good luck with the other goal too. :)

Writing down your food does make such a difference. Always makes me stop and think, do I really want to write this one down? Keep it up!

Ha! Thank you, Lisa! ;-) Feel free to apply with me at any time! {Pretty please?} :-)

I LOVE that your goal is to get your waistline under 35 inches. In fact, that is what insurance companies are starting to look at rather than BMI to evaluate obesity. You can be skinner but have a waist above 35 and be very susceptible to diabetes. In fact, the medical community is suggesting that a woman should NEVER have her waistline above 35 and 40 for a man. I LOVE that you have recognized that important health issue. Most people don’t understand that. XXOO You rock!

Frugal Femina Reply:

Thanks, Leah! My hubs focuses on keeping his waist under 40, so he brought me on the bandwagon, too. :-)
