It’s Christmas! Visit Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park

December 15, 2009

This week we got to visit Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park. Bradley is all about Christmas lights right now and points them out to me everywhere we go. So this was a great treat for him! And there was soooo much to do. You have to pay $15 per car to get in, but it was such a fun evening for us, I didn’t mind a bit! You could go with some friends and split the cost. You have to pay extra for some of the activities in the park, but you can certainly have fun without paying more.

First you drive through miles of lights. {Here’s a quick video of the lights.} They have a special radio signal set up so you can listen to Christmas music while you’re driving. There are lights with horses running, teddy bears, and even some cowboy boots I thought Lori would like especially.

Then you park, and they have activities set up in the parking lot and in the actual park. You can go to the petting zoo, where they have alpacas, camels, buffalo, and other animals who really want you to feed them. You can pay a couple of bucks to get some carrots and seeds for them. Aren’t these fellas cute?!

Outside the petting zoo, you can take a camel ride, or stop in the cottage and get a little snack to warm up.

Inside by the gift shop, they have people singing Christmas music, sand art, Santa pictures, a craft fair… The place was all decked out!

You go outside again before you head into the museum. They have horse rides and more food. We let Bradley ride the horse. I think we paid $5, and they took him around this tiny circle twice. I know they need to make money, but that was a bit extreme.

Then we went in the museum, and we got to see how sleighs and wagons evolved through the years. I loved that!

Bradley got to let loose and play with Legos for a while. An artist was drawing caricatures of kiddos. We saw a huge model-train display.

And finally, Bradley and I rode the train while Hubs got some hot apple cider and cinnamon almonds. A yummy way to end the evening!

Southern Lights is open this year through December 31, 2009. Special thanks to one of our readers, Monica, for letting us know that LexTran is supposed to be shuttling people to Southern Lights for free on December 22, 2009.

Raleigh used to have a huge light show around Santa’s village and then they stopped like 2 years ago to conserve electricity I think. Missed going!

Hi, Farrah,

I was thinking that as we drove along. That it must have cost a lot of money to buy the lights–let alone run the electricity. But still a nice thing for the community to do together.

Lori,

I’m guessing *those* cost a pretty penny! :-)

I don’t think you emphasized enough on how much those animals want you to feed them, LOL! We went and my 2.5 year old son was freaked out by the camel that wouldn’t leave us alone! I thought one of the camels was going to jump the fence and take me down. They must have been starving him or something!
Those ostriches were pretty demanding too! I walked by and one tried to take a bite out of my hand…it kinda hurt too! I didn’t think they were very appropriate animals for a petting zoo.
Caden had a fun time. He also loves Christmas lights and trains. The train “conductor” even let Caden sit in his lap and drive the train in a circle…he thought it was so cool!

Hey, Ashley,

You’re right. I maybe should have put that in bold with lots of exclamation points, huh?! :-) I didn’t buy the food to feed them, so when I tried to pet them, they had absolutely zero interest in me. :-)

Oh, my goodness! I won’t tell Bradley that Caden got to do that! That’s a dream come true for a little fella. Bet he will remember that for a good long while.

Sounds like a fairytale place to me! Between the horses and the decorations I might think I died and went to heaven! :) Thank you for sharing the video too! You’re right, $15 sounds like a bargain!

Hey, Evelyn,

We actually ended up going twice this season. Once with FIL and once with MIL. So pretty.
