I’ve been reading posts around Blogdom about dealing with debt. Some people are plowing through it faster than they expected. Some people had it paid off and now realize they’re back in the same boat. Many face unemployment and are taking the opportunity to learn new skills and trust God to see them through.
Me? Well, I told you all about why I’m blessed. Now that Hubby has a regular job, I want more than ever to be responsible with our finances. I love the reminder we have at church every week when we recite after the offering “for all things come from you, and of your own gifts we have given to you.” It’s easier to give when you remember Who is really divvying out the paychecks.
We got paid monthly when we lived in Georgia. I didn’t think I would like that at first, but I really did. It was easy to pay the bills. Get the paycheck, check everything off the list, and you’re done for the month. Now, Xon gets paid six times a month. So we have little chunks of money coming in all the time, and I have to work a little harder to make sure it’s going to the right places at the right times.
I remember my mom saying once, “I didn’t handle my money well this month.” It’s easy to throw your hands in the air and give up when you’ve made a mistake. But you can take a moment to reset and try again next paycheck. Walk out of the store before you make a purchase you’ll regret. Better yet, find a creative way to get it for less. (Hello? Ever heard of Swagbucks?)
In many ways, I feel like we’re starting all over again with this new job. Some people renew their wedding vows. We’re renewing our commitment to handle our finances as we should. More like our son, who says as soon as he spots any loose change, “Put in piggy bank, Mama?” (That’s his piggy in the pic above.)
I hope you’ll join me.
