Caramel apples

05.14.09

I had another activity in mind for this week, but Bradley kept talking about the candy apples in one of his books. I asked him if he wanted to make candy apples for our activity. He said, “Da.” (That’s his word for “yes” most of the time.)

So we took three apples, 25 individual caramels, a tablespoon of milk, and some plastic forks (instead of Popsicle sticks). We put the caramels and the milk in a bowl in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. We took the stems off the apples, washed and dried the apples, and put the forks in the middle. Then we dipped them in the bowl of caramel, put them on a buttered cookie sheet, and put them in the refrigerator. (See step-by-step directions here.)

While they were cooling, we read four books about apples that we got at the library. They were:

Dumpy’s Apple Shop
Apple Cider Making Days (He, of course, loved the tractor in this book.)
How to Make an Apple Pie and see the world
Apple Farmer Annie

During dinner, Bradley asked me, “What is the sun?” (We recently made solar cookies and had a lesson on the sun.) I said, “You tell me.” He said, “Energy. Big star.” So I know these little activities stick with him, even though he’s not quite two. That’s good to know!
