Bradley and I made solar cookies for our project this week. First you make a batch of sugar cookies. When they cool, ice them and sprinkle some yellow sugar on them to show that the sun has a granular appearance. Then you put M&M’s to represent sun spots. Then you put Twizzlers to represent arcs. Then eat!
I will admit that I forgot to put icing on the cookies, but it still worked ok. We just pushed the candy into the cookie a little bit. Bradley had a hard time motivating himself to put the M&M’s on the cookie instead of eating all of them. But we eventually got a few on there.
We talked about the sun as we made the cookies. At the end, he could tell me the sun is in the sky, it’s a star, and it gives us energy. Hey, that’s a good start.
Later when we went on a walk, I asked him what the sun gives us, and he kept saying, “God.” I think he has heard a thing or two about THE Son. Which reminds me of that joke where every answer in Sunday School has to be God, even if it sounds like it should be a squirrel.
On a side note, Xon always asks Bradley who the boss is. He says it’s Mama and Dada. Then Xon asks who the BIG boss is, and he says it’s God. Awwwwww…..Sweet little cherub.
Thanks to The Science Mouse for the neat project idea!
Do you have a favorite sugar cookie recipe that would work well for these?
