Today Bradley and I made a milk toast painting. Milk toast is a comfort food that kids used to eat for breakfast. You take some toasted bread and sugar dipped in milk with melted butter and add cinnamon and/or raisins.
When I was in kindergarten, we made milk toast and painted a picture on it with food coloring and then ate it. That is a great memory from my childhood–one that I wanted to repeat with Bradley. He had great fun getting messy with the painting and then was really quiet as he gobbled it all up!
The BBC Web site gives directions for toast art here. (Their designs are a little more sophisticated, as you can see below.)
1. Mix food colouring in milk (a few drops for a pale colour or lots for dark colours.
2. Paint your design on a slice of white bread (don’t use too much of the ‘paint’ otherwise the bread will get too soggy) and leave to dry.
3. When the bread is dry, put it in the toaster.
4. You can eat it once it’s done – yum!
Meghann commented that she is going to try this with her family. Be sure to send pics if you try it. I’d love to see what your munchkins come up with!
